Digital Bill of Rights
I Make My Own Rules
Life is about making choices. How will you protect yourself and curate a positive digital reputation as you explore, learn, share and play online? Let Savvy Cyber Kids help you create your own Digital Bill of Rights to tell others what you expect from them and what they can expect from you.
In this exercise, you will notice that some of the items are meant to be shared to let people know how you expect to be treated by others; while other items are for you to decide how you will act and treat others online.
So, what does that mean? Do this activity twice and send yourself the results both times via email when you are done.
The first time, answer the questions for the way you expect others to treat you. Take a screen shot of your results and share it on your story and in a post on your social media accounts. Because you are using your cyber super powers for good, add the hashtag #cyberhero to your post and tag @savvycyberkids . By doing so, you may be selected to receive a small token of Savvy Cyber Kids’ appreciation.
The second time, answer the questions for the way you will behave and treat others online. Share it with your parents or other adults in your life. If you remember to apply your cyber ethics lessons, they will appreciate your choices.
Your email address and selected items will not be stored or used by Savvy Cyber Kids. By filling out this form, the information will only be used to email you a copy of your Digital Bill of Rights.

Tip: When teaching the Bill of Rights in a social studies or political science class, this exercise is a great way to integrate digital citizenship into traditional curriculum.
I Keep Myself Safe…
- My usernames do not include any personal or private information about me.
- My passwords are different from each other (and are not easily guessed!).
- My parents and I are connected. They know about all of my accounts and know my passwords. And I always accept their follow requests to all of my accounts.
- My profile picture does not have anything in it that can identify me (because these are public images).
- My account profiles are set to private and I leave account information blank.
- I know who to turn to when I need help with anything I experience in life in both the physical and virtual worlds.
Are We Friends…
- I will only accept people as followers that I know in the physical world.
- I will only follow people that I know in the physical world (exceptions are companies, organizations, celebrities, sports figures, politicians, or other public personalities).
- If I follow a company, organization, or public personality, I will not let them follow me.
My Digital World Is About Fun And I Intend To Keep It That Way…
- I recognize that poor decision-making online can get me and others into trouble.
- I will not take and/or share inappropriate pictures or videos.
- I will never ask someone else to take an inappropriate picture or video.
- Pictures and videos of myself and other people must be fully clothed and bathing suit pictures may only be taken at the beach or pool.
Let’s Respect Each Other’s Privacy…
- I don’t want you to post a picture of me online without checking with me first.
- I’m ok with you posting a picture of me online. But keep in mind that a lot of people see my profile and I don’t want to be embarrassed by what you post.
- If I let you know that a post bothers me, please take it down. I promise to do the same for you.
- I will always ask someone before taking their picture.
- I will not post/share/re-post pictures unless I ask the person or people in the picture first.
- Don’t send me chain messages where I am expected to do something, because it usually involves me sharing very personal information.
Give Me Some Space…
- I don’t check my devices when I’m driving.
- I don’t check my devices after 9 pm.
- I don’t check my devices at school.
- I don’t check my devices at work.
- I don’t check my devices during after-school activities.
- I don’t check my phone during meals with my family or friends.
- My family makes family meals technology-free zones. Sure, there might be exceptions. But don’t count on me to respond then.
- I can’t reply to you when I’m with family in restaurants. We are device-free at meals.
Let’s Keep It Real…
- If I have to cancel plans at the last minute, I do more than text my apologies.
- I will be true to myself online. Social networks are an opportunity to share and stay connected, but I don’t plan to adopt a different persona online.
- I will check myself every now and then and ask myself if I am moderating my use of technology appropriately.
- I won’t pay more attention to my gadgets than to people and experiences IRL.
Nothing Is Private. Lots Of People Can See My Posts, Including Relatives, Potential Employers And College Admissions Officers. So…
- I won’t post highly personal information.
- I won’t post things that will make others feel left out.
- I won’t post hurtful messages.
- I won’t post anything that I’d be embarrassed to have my parents, grandparents, or other loved ones see.
Let’s Remember The Golden Rule…
- I apply the same principles of good manners online and offline. It’s about respectful behavior toward other people. If you can’t play by this golden rule, it’s time for us to part.
- I will consider the effect of my texts, emails and posts. Join me in remembering to think about the impact of what we say online.
- Hands down, I will not participate in cyberbullying. I won’t start it and I won’t comment and play along.
- Everything I post will be positive, no matter what the context is.
- If someone else posts something mean, I will not negatively engage (by commenting or liking it); I will add something positive, tell an adult and/or ignore it.
- If a mean comment is made towards me, I will not react immediately. Instead I will reach out to a trusted adult for help to decide if I should make a positive comment back, block or remove the poster, or ignore the comment.
- If I am not sure if the picture or video I’m about to take or share is inappropriate, I will think of what a parent or grandparent would say if they saw it.
Sometimes Me And My Devices Go Dark…
- I love to stay connected but sometimes I need to take a digital break. If I don’t respond right back to you, please give me some time to reply.
- I will not bring my devices to bed at night…so I can get a good night sleep and not be grumpy.
- My phone is on “silent” or turned off at religious observances, in classrooms, libraries, theaters, and at family meals.
Why I Might Block You…
- If you are mean, I will block you.
- If you ask me to take off my clothes, I will block you.
- If you send me a nude picture or video, I will block you and report you to the authorities.
- If you talk in a sexual manner, I will block you.
- If I don’t like what you say or send, I will block you.
